Camping hack to protect matches in a cardboard box Just use a zip-lock plastic bag as you did for the rubbish. Waterproof container to keep the matches dry in case you get your gear rained on or capsize your boat/canoe. I went camping with a newbie once and she brought a hairdryer. I told her to plug it into a Tree. I’m also going crazy about why we shouldn’t take an actual manufactured box of matches! Or lighter. Because the matchbox can get wet Sherlock. He put it on a plastic container so it can avoid getting wet just in case.
