As we see in the post-credit scenes, Groot is growing rapidly. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set shortly after Guardians of the Galaxy 1, a matter of months, not years. The answer is no. Groot loses limbs (branches) all the time during fights (sometimes in soil/dirt terrain, apt for gardening) and he’s still the last of his species.
